Update on Leeds & West Ham plots to sign Connor Goldson

Rangers may need to offer Connor Goldson a new contract interest from down south led by West Ham, Football Insider has learned.

The centre-back, 27, has been on the radar of the Premier League club since January as well Championship top-three Leeds United, West Brom and Fulham.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club believe they can withstand interest in Goldson after valuing him at £6million-plus earlier this year.

They may need to initiate new contract talks, however, with the 6ft 3in leader of their defence.

Given the financial chaos caused by Covid-19, the Gers’ previous valuation is likely to be reduced as transfer prices tumble ahead of the next window.

Nevertheless, Steven Gerrard is a big admirer of Goldson and does not want to lose him this summer.

He has started the former Brighton man in almost every match since he took charge at Ibrox despite having three other senior centre-backs to choose from, all of whom he also signed.

Like many of his Rangers’ colleagues, Goldson was excellent before Christmas but his form tailed off after the winter break as the team’s title bid collapsed.

But he has proved excellent value for the £3million paid to lure him in the summer of 2018.

Goldson has played a remarkable 105 matches since he signed.

In the 2019-20 campaign that was terminated last week, he made 51 appearances, all of which were starts.
