Paul Gascoigne pays beautiful tribute to Walter Smith as Rangers legend dies

Paul Gascoigne has dubbed Walter Smith a “father figure” after it was confirmed the Rangers legend has died.

On Tuesday morning, the Scottish champions sadly announced on Twitter that the club’s former manager and chairman has died aged 73.

Tributes have since poured in for Smith and ex-Ibrox star Gazza has joined those sharing their sympathy on what is a sad day in Scottish football’s history.

“I am extremely upset to hear the news of Walter’s passing,” said Gascoigne, as quoted by Sky Sports News journalist Alan Myers on Twitter.

“I really looked up to Walker, he gave me something to smile again with football and he supported me like a father figure whilst at Rangers.

“I will miss our frequent telephone chats.

“I am thinking about Walter’s family at this sad time.”

Legend

There’s no other word to describe Smith.

You can see just how widely adored the former Rangers and Scotland manager is by the outpouring of tributes from everyone in football both north and south of the border.

Smith touched the lives of many, influenced the careers of many and was just a downright brilliant human being.

The world is a worse place without Smith, who’ll never be forgotten for what he did here at Ibrox across two spells between 1991-1998 and 2007-2011.

Smith led us to 10 league titles and even a spot in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup final.

He managed one of the greatest ever squads in not only Scottish football history but potentially European football history back in the 1990s with Gazza joined by the likes of Ally McCoist, Brian Laudrup, Stuart McCall, Jorg Albertz, Mark Hateley and more.

We will miss you, boss.

You’ll always be a legend.
