Charlie Nicholas would be ‘amazed’ if Rangers don’t sell Calvin Bassey in summer

Charlie Nicholas has admitted he would be “simply amazed” in Rangers don’t sell Calvin Bassey in the summer transfer window.

The defender’s form has seen a host of clubs eye a move [The Sun] for the Europa League finalist with the Sky Sports pundit placing a minimum price of £25million on his head.

Nicholas dubbed the Nigerian the best young player in Scotland but believes he still has a lot more to give.

He told Scottish Daily Express: “I can see Rangers getting £25 million if they sell Calvin Bassey to fund their summer rebuild.

“You can see why Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa are so keen to get him but there will be a string of top clubs looking at him.

“I think the minimum value would be in the £25 million bracket.

“The reason why I put him in that range is because he is already a better player than Tyrone Mings.

“He was one that was built up and has ended up becoming an England international but I look at Bassey and I think there is more. I also think he has more potential to get even better.

He added: “For me, he has been the best young player in Scotland. The one player that the top English and European clubs will be looking at is absolutely Bassey.

“How Leicester City didn’t see the potential in him is really surprising.

“I would be simply amazed if Bassey was still at Ibrox next season.”

Talent.

Bassey is a ridiculously good player already, aged just 22-years-old. It has taken him a little while to fully find his feet in Scotland – understandably – but this season has seen him establish himself as one of the Rangers’ top performers.

His display in the Europa League final was off the charts – for such a young and inexperienced player to put in a performance like that is a very good sign of things to come in the future.

Unfortunately, his future doesn’t look likely to be at Ibrox though amid massive interest for the youngster which is a huge shame.

You would have thought Light Blues fans would be used to it by now but it is getting increasingly tiresome that as soon as a player shows any sign of promise – they are snatched away from Ibrox.

It would amazing to keep hold of him for a little while longer but if his transfer fee is used to improve the squad – it might not be the worst thing in the world if he does leave.
