Chris Jack shares Michael Beale ‘non-negotiables’ to save Rangers career

Lifting silverware is “simply a must” for Rangers this season if Michael Beale is to remain in the Ibrox dugout, according to Chris Jack.

Writing in the Rangers Review (14 September), Jack claimed that the Gers’ Europa League campaign offers the “chance for momentum to be built” rather than “destroyed” by a tougher Champions League draw.

Jack points to the Viaplay Cup quarter-final against Livingston as “one of the most important matches of his tenure” as it offers them the clearest chance to lift a trophy.

Rangers

Jack said: “The Europa League provides the chance for momentum to be built rather than destroyed and confidence to be gained rather than crushed and six points from their first two outings would put Rangers well on course for progression from the section. It would also quieten Beale’s critics.

“Like all Ibrox managers, Beale will be judged on what he wins. The quarter-final with Livingston in a fortnight is, therefore, one of the most important matches of his tenure and – with Celtic already knocked out – Rangers simply must lift silverware at Beale’s third time of asking.”

Important

It feels like Beale has already had a few “most important” matches this season – the Champions League away leg against PSV Eindhoven and the Old Firm, both tests failed by the boss.

Jack speaks as if Beale’s dismissal is not imminent and his hypothetical predictions suggest he could have the chance to go further in the season than many would claim.

The expectation of a trophy is a burden all Rangers managers must carry, with Beale being one of just four permanent Ibrox managers not to win a trophy in their tenure.

Beale’s future won’t be based on going all the way in the Europa League. The Gers won’t be favourites to reach the final in Dublin next year, but convincing performances on the continent will offer him the chance against weaker opposition to boost confidence and show the fans the club is heading in the right direction.

The Livingston cup clash, on 27 September, could make or break Beale’s season. A loss would almost decimate any chance the Gers have of lifting silverware and likely decimate any chance Beale has of staying employed.

For now, Beale still has the keys to the dressing room and looks to remain there in Rangers’ upcoming league clash against St Johnstone on Saturday (16 September).

But the hierarchy could be close to changing the locks unless Beale turns the tide.
