Former Rangers man says Beale faces ‘inevitable outcome’ if he fails to improve one area

Arthur Numan says Michael Beale must improve his record against Celtic to have any hope of keeping his job as Rangers manager.

Beale has experienced mounting pressure and calls for his sacking have been growing following the Light Blues’ defeat to Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season, leaving Rangers four points behind their Glasgow rivals.

While for some the frustration began with the embarrassing 7-3 defeat on aggregate to PSV which ensured Beale’s side wouldn’t reach the Champions League group stage, former Ibrox left-back Numan believes results in the Old Firm could ultimately cost Beale his job.

As quoted by the Daily Record on Thursday (14 September) he said: “Defeats to Celtic have been happening far too often in the past year and a way must be found to stop this poor run. If we can’t find a way to beat Celtic then we are all aware of the inevitable outcome. People will lose their jobs.

“The fans demand that we get on track to lift the league title and they are perfectly entitled to feel that way. However, let’s have a period of calm and stick together. Let’s all push in the one direction at the same time. That is always helpful. That said, there still needs to be success. And quickly.

“What has happened this season, so far, hasn’t been acceptable. Michael and the players will be aware of this.”

Lose their jobs

Everyone is very much aware of the pressure mounting on Beale currently at Ibrox and while his record against Celtic has been pretty poor since he took over, there is far more that needs to improve quickly than just the record in the Old Firm.

In six matches against the Hoops, Beale has only won once, drawing one match and losing on the other four occasions and that poor form is ensuring that the Gers are always chasing Brendan Rodgers’ side whether it be in the league or cup competitions.

But Beale also slipped up in the defeat to Kilmarnock on the opening day of the season and his work in the transfer market has drawn a lot of criticism and deservedly so, with arguably only Jack Butland of his nine summer signings impressing in the early stages of the season.

A win over Celtic before the international break would have lifted the mood at Ibrox, but realistically it would have just been papering over the cracks. So much needs to improve under the QPR manager in the coming weeks to ease the pressure on him.

A win over St Johnstone is a must on Saturday (16 September) and anything else will likely spell the end of his time in charge of Rangers. Even if they do pick up three points, it will have to be the start of an impressive run.
