Mark Wilson: Margin for error gone for Beale as Rangers ‘Storm’ continues

Scottish Daily Mail journalist Mark Wilson has claimed Michael Beale’s margin for error at Rangers has eroded, and that a positive response will be required when they travel to St Johnstone amid a “storm of supporter discontent”.

Wilson also shared his view that the boss will need a consistent run of results if he wants to ease the pressure, having dropped six points over the first four Premiership matches of the season.

Pressure on Beale had ramped up following a heavy defeat to PSV in Eindhoven and then a 1-0 defeat to Celtic at Ibrox, and Wilson claims he could suffer a similar fate to Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Writing via his column in the Scottish Daily Mail [15 September, pg 79], Wilson shared: “A positive response is clearly required after Ibrox reacted with fury to a limp Old Firm loss prior to the international break. Margin for error has been eroded.

“With six Premiership points shed over the first four matches, Beale will be acutely aware of the need to begin a consistent run of results if he is to soothe a febrile situation and remove questions about his own position.

“St Johnstone provide the first obstacle in that regard. Sitting bottom of the table with two points, they might appeal like an ideal opponent to the untrained observer.

“The very recent history of Rangers managers suggests otherwise. Last November, pain in Perth provided a prelude to the departure of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.”

Nothing but three points will be good enough

With the pressure on Beale mounting with each passing day, with the international break extending the usual period of anger after a defeat in the Old Firm, nothing other than three points will be good enough if the boss wants to ease the tension around the club.

Realistically, even a comprehensive victory against St Johnstone won’t ease the pressure. The Englishman will need to put together a strong run of form if he wishes to impress the fans at Ibrox. The only true way to overturn frustrations at recent defeats is to win.

It’s tricky to ask a manager to go and win every single game, but that is the expectation at a club the size and stature of Rangers. The next Old Firm clash, which would give Beale the chance to make amends, isn’t until 30 December. The boss may not make it that far.

Van Bronckhorst suffered his eventual fate in a similar circumstance to his successor, with a defeat to Celtic all but sealing his exit before time was afforded him in an attempt to recover, but he eventually ran out.
