Serious injury news confirmed at Ibrox minutes before Rangers v Motherwell

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed that Oscar Cortes has suffered a serious injury and will be out long-term ahead of the Gers’ clash with Motherwell.

The Light Blues welcome Stuart Kettlewell’s side to Ibrox on Saturday (2 March) as they look to extend their lead over Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, but are without their Colombian winger.

Clement had confirmed that the 20-year-old would miss Saturday’s clash in his pre-match press conference on Friday (1 March) but ahead of the meeting with Motherwell the Belgian confirmed it was a more serious issue.

Speaking to RangersTV on Saturday (2 March) he said: “Oscar has a serious injury, so he will be a long time out. It’s a strange one with the action he did to have an injury like that. We need to see what to do operation or not, also in contact with Lens about it.”

When will Oscar Cortes be fit to play for Rangers again?

Rangers have received plenty of praise for their excellent January recruitment and while Mohamed Diomande has impressed for the Light Blues, few players have been as impressive as Cortes since he arrived at Ibrox.

It doesn’t sound like supporters will be seeing the 20-year-old in action for a few weeks at least and that could potentially extend to months if Cortes does need surgery, which could in theory mean that his season is over.

If Clement’s side want to beat Celtic to the Premiership title this season, they are going to need their best players fit and available between now and the end of the season and Cortes is undoubtedly one of Clement’s key stars.

Hopefully, he will make a quicker recovery than expected and return to the fold in the coming weeks and months fit and available, but it will be interesting to see how this new injury blow could impact a future permanent switch.
